Lecture One

Have I always wanted to be a Journalist? No. Do I even want to be a Journalist now? I don't know. Everyone's aware of how kids go through periods of passionate inspiration when they are utterly convinced that's what they were born to do? Well that was the deal with Journalism when I was about 10, however there's not much to be said for this as I also went through a stage of wanting to be a dinosaur and a fire truck. So to satisfy my 10 year old self, and because my other childhood occupations weren't to be seen on the course list, here I am.

Journalism can never be silent: that
is its greatest virtue and its greatest
fault. It must speak, and speak
immediately, while the echoes of
wonder, the claims of triumph and
the signs of horror are still in the air.
-Henry Anatole

The above quote, from the lecture notes, is how I feel about Journalism, as the immediate scribe of the world's happenings, as well written truths, however I'm quite aware that I may be scoffed at for thinking such a thing what with news values being so inverted as they are. I'll finish with a quote that I feel also defines why I believe to be why Journalism is so vital,

The smarter the journalists are, the better off society is. For to a degree, people read the press to inform themselves-and the better the teacher, the better the student body.
-Warren Buffet
