Lecture Five

This weeks lecture was about radio and was therefore a sound lecture. It starred two guests, Richard Fidler and Steve Austin, both of whom are proficient and experienced radio journalists for ABC Radio and both of whom speak of their experience in radio. Back in Toowoomba, where I moved from this year, my parents played ABC Radio National 24/7. I am not exaggerating, they literally had it playing 24/7, even when no one was home. Though I found this somewhat irritable at times, especially during my early teens when I thought CFM was the be all and end all, I am now glad that I have been so thoroughly entrenched in quality radio my whole life. Austin quotes from Steve Allen, "Radio is the theatre of the mind" which is true, to be a radio presenter you must be witty, eloquent, articulate, you must be able to paint a picture with words - an ability which I'm sure I lack and thus I hold quite a lot of respect for those who do hold such qualities. Dare I say I even miss the perpetual undertone of ABC radio, the crackling backdrop of my every day life in Toowoomba - dare I say it might even be time to invest in a radio.
